The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has initiated the distribution of flood relief palliatives to flood-prone communities across the eight local government areas of Bayelsa State. This effort is part of the NDDC’s strategy to alleviate the impact of flooding on the people of the state.
During the handover ceremony in Yenagoa, the Managing Director of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, emphasized that the distribution of relief materials reflects the Commission’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the people and providing assistance to mitigate the effects of recurring floods in many communities.
Dr. Ogbuku, represented by NDDC Director of Procurement, Dr. Week Doodei, and Bayelsa State Office Director, Engr. Godknows Alamieyeseigha, highlighted that the palliatives were handed over to community representatives to aid them in overcoming their difficulties.
He stated, “We share in the pains of the victims of the flooding in Bayelsa State. We realize that they have lost a lot which cannot be replaced. We assure you that the NDDC has very good programs for the people of the Niger Delta region, and as many people as possible will benefit from the distribution of the palliatives.”
The relief materials include food and household items, farm inputs, as well as livelihood items such as canoes, fishing nets, and hooks. Dr. Ogbuku urged community leaders to ensure the fair distribution of these items, emphasizing the NDDC’s broader role in social services and intervention during challenging situations.
He further warned against hoarding or diverting the relief items, emphasizing the NDDC’s commitment to monitoring the distribution process to ensure that the materials reach the affected areas.
The Managing Director concluded by appealing to community leaders to ensure that the relief items are delivered to the vulnerable populations in their respective areas, reinforcing the Commission’s mandate to address critical situations in the Niger Delta region.
