A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano, Alhajj Alhassan Yaryasa, has issued a warning to Governor Abba Yusuf against any attempts to dissolve the emirates in the state. Yaryasa’s caution comes amid calls for the reversal of the creation of four additional emirates, a decision made during the tenure of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
The immediate past administration had created four new emirates and removed the former Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, replacing him with Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero. After the 2023 governorship election, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) promised to reverse Ganduje’s decision and restore the Kano Emirate to its previous structure.
Yaryasa, who serves as the Coordinator of the Tinubu Camping Organisation for Kano South, cautioned Governor Yusuf against succumbing to pressure to dissolve the emirates, emphasizing the potential negative consequences for peace in the state. He argued that those advocating for the dissolution had personal and selfish interests, aiming to create disaffection between the government and the people of the emirates.
Yaryasa emphasized that Governor Yusuf, as the leader of the state, should disregard calls to dismantle the emirates, as traditional rulers are not political appointees and tampering with their positions could lead to public resistance. He urged respected elders in the state to advise the governor against such actions, emphasizing the need for a law preventing politicians from meddling in the affairs of traditional institutions.
The APC chieftain stressed that any attempt to dissolve the new emirates would impact the governor’s popularity negatively, and he called for a balance between political decisions and respecting the significance of traditional institutions in the eyes of society.
