President Bola Tinubu has defended the size of his cabinet, justifying the appointment of 47 ministers by stating that it reflects the diversity of roles required for an efficient government. Tinubu expressed skepticism about reducing the cabinet size, stating that there is no guarantee it would boost performance.
During a meeting with the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Tinubu emphasized the role of faith leaders in fostering unity and peace in the country. He urged CAN to propagate the message of tolerance and hope among Nigerians, cautioning that the opposite could damage the country beyond repair.
Tinubu acknowledged criticisms over the heavily-staffed cabinet but argued that merging portfolios would burden officials with more responsibilities than they can manage. He highlighted the need to give people challenges they can handle for efficient and resourceful governance.
Former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari, Goodluck Jonathan, Umaru Yar’Adua, and Olusegun Obasanjo maintained relatively smaller cabinets in comparison. Tinubu’s administration holds the record for the highest number of ministers since Nigeria’s return to democracy.
Addressing Christian leaders, Tinubu called for their support in the fight against corruption by encouraging a change of mindset on money-related matters. He stressed the importance of dialogue and urged the clergy to provide input, assuring them of his administration’s open-door policy.
In response, the President of CAN, Daniel Okoh, commended Tinubu’s leadership and urged him not to relent in providing good governance, emphasizing the association’s readiness to partner in nation-building. Okoh expressed confidence in Tinubu’s ability to address challenges and turn around the fortunes of Nigeria.
