The Generalissimo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take a lead in championing the restructuring of Nigeria. Adams expressed disappointment that, despite Tinubu being an advocate of federalism, the country has not progressed, emphasizing the need for urgent restructuring.
Speaking at the 10th World Congress of Oodua Progressive Union in Osogbo, Osun state, Adams proposed the transformation of the existing six geopolitical zones into federating units, with Abuja serving as the governing center for the nation. He suggested relabeling the zones as regions or provinces, each having its own state and local government areas. Adams emphasized the importance of creating four governance structures, each with its policing system.
Adams stated, “With that, Nigeria will move forward. That is our suggestion in the Oodua Progressive Union and Oodua People’s Congress.” He urged President Tinubu to embrace the idea of restructuring, reminding him of his past advocacy for federalism during his tenure as the Governor of Lagos State.
As an opinion leader, Adams emphasized the responsibility of reminding the president about the need for restructuring, citing its significance in resolving security issues and achieving genuine economic development. He noted that previous economic policies, security strategies, and appointments have not yielded the desired results, stressing that restructuring is essential for progress.
Adams concluded, “As a citizen, we have to proffer solutions and remind those in government that they are there to solve problems. How do they solve the problem? They have to restructure Nigeria.” The call for restructuring comes amid ongoing challenges in the country and a growing discourse on the need for a more decentralized and equitable governance system.
