In a concerning incident, three mobile policemen attached to PMF 51, Oghara, have been reportedly abducted by suspected herdsmen in the Ohoror community along the East-West Road in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. The kidnappers also seized the service AK47 rifles along with ammunition belonging to the abducted officers.
The kidnapped policemen were part of a team of six mobile officers assigned to the Ughelli-Patani Road nipping point. The abduction occurred while the officers were attending to a distress call from a young man named Moses Progress, who reported being robbed by suspected herdsmen while performing rituals to the river god under a nearby bridge.
According to a police source, after receiving the distress call, the team leader detailed the three inspectors to accompany the complainant to the scene armed with AK-47 rifles. However, upon returning, the team noticed the absence of the three inspectors and learned from Progress that they had been attacked by six herdsmen in the bush, prompting him to escape while the policemen fled in different directions.
The police subsequently arrested Progress after calling for backup, as he claimed not to know the whereabouts of the abducted officers. As of the time of reporting, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Delta State command, Bright Edafe, could not be reached for comments on the incident.
The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in some regions, particularly involving attacks on law enforcement officers, exacerbating concerns about the safety of those tasked with maintaining public order.
