In a bold move, Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, the senator representing Anambra South in the National Assembly, has officially declared his intention to contest the Anambra governorship in the 2025 elections. Speaking to journalists in Nnewi on Sunday, Mr. Ubah, a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC), urged the people of Anambra to entrust him with their mandate, emphasizing his commitment to addressing the state’s long-standing leadership challenges.
The senator outlined his vision for a single four-year term, during which he pledged to conduct Local Government Area (LGA) elections within four months of assuming office. This, he argued, would bolster political participation at the grassroots level and ensure that LGA funds are made available for competitive and decentralized development.
Sen. Ubah emphasized the significance of local government elections in unbundling the state government, allowing for increased autonomy and directing development efforts towards grassroots communities. He asserted that his administration would prioritize community development through strategic initiatives, breaking away from the patterns of the past 18 years, which he rated at a mere 20 percent in terms of governance effectiveness.
“I have a burning desire to contest the next governorship election in Anambra because this government and those before it have not been able to put the state on the development trajectory that our people desire,” Sen. Ubah remarked. He identified the need to support commerce, develop the health sector into a hub for medical tourism, and accelerate community development through proactive governance.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the prevailing trend of voting for individuals with “over-bloated personality and structure,” Sen. Ubah called for a shift towards supporting candidates with passion and a proven track record. He highlighted his consistent manifesto, which has remained unchanged since 2013, underscoring his unwavering commitment to effecting positive change in Anambra.
Reflecting on his political journey, Sen. Ubah highlighted his electoral successes in wresting power from the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), having secured the Senate seat twice consecutively under the banner of the Young Progressives Party, a minority party.
In addressing a recent faceoff between the Prof. Chukwuma Soludo-led government and traditional rulers in Anambra over the conferment of a Chieftaincy title on him, Sen. Ubah deemed the incident unfortunate and unnecessary. He expressed disappointment, asserting, “I felt bad about it; it is a dent in our traditional institution. I strongly believe that those who championed that did not know what they did. Thank God it has been revered though without an apology to me.”
