In a spectacular display of athletic prowess, Tobi Amusan, the 26-year-old track and field sensation, has clinched the African indoor record at the opening leg of the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold in Astana, Kazakhstan. Breaking Glory Alozie’s previous best of 7.82, Amusan left an indelible mark on the track with her remarkable performance.
Amusan, the reigning world 100m hurdles record holder with a time of 12.12, previewed her exceptional form by storming home in her semifinal heat in a swift 7.91 seconds. Undeterred, she further elevated her game, clocking an impressive 7.77 seconds to secure victory in the event. Notable competitors in the race included the 2019 World outdoor champion, Nia Ali (7.89), and Irish athlete Sarah Lavin (7.91), who claimed the second and third positions, respectively.
The recorded time has positioned Amusan as the second-fastest hurdler on the world top list for the season, just behind Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, who ran 7.75 at the Corky Classics in Lubbock, Texas, last week. Amusan’s latest achievement has also propelled her to the 20th position on the world all-time list.
Notably, Tobi Amusan has now shattered all three African records previously held by Glory Alozie. She initially surpassed Alozie’s African Games record of 12.74, set in 1999, by running 12.68 in 2019. Subsequently, Amusan broke Alozie’s 12.44 African record, recording an astonishing 12.42 seconds en route to claiming her first Diamond League title.
With this latest triumph, the versatile sprint hurdler adds the African indoor record to her already impressive collection of accolades, which includes records at the Nigeria, Nigerian Championships, African Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and world levels. Tobi Amusan continues to etch her name in the annals of track and field history with each stellar performance.
