In a significant development, the Federal Government has ordered the immediate suspension of reconstruction work on the Eleme-Onne section of the East-West Road in Rivers State. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, made this announcement during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
Minister Umahi revealed that the suspension was prompted by the use of sub-standard materials by the contractor responsible for the project. Expressing dissatisfaction, he mentioned that he inspected the site on the previous day and was dismayed by both the quality of the work and the sluggish pace of progress, especially considering the government’s advance payment of N33 billion.
Umahi emphasized the necessity of resolving certain irregularities surrounding the project before resuming work. He voiced concerns about the prolonged completion timeline, stating that the project, at its current pace, would not be finished within five years.
Addressing the contractors, Umahi remarked, “The project must benefit the people. The rainy season is coming in two months and the people will go ahead suffering.”
The Minister highlighted the issue of sub-standard sand, noting that the material used did not meet the specified standard. He expressed dissatisfaction with the contractor’s progress and the quality of work, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the project specifications.
“I saw that the sand they are using is not river sharp. What we paid for is river sharp sand,” Umahi stated. He conducted a practical test, pouring water on the sand to observe its behavior, and confirmed that it did not meet the required standards.
Umahi revealed that a meeting with the contractor has been scheduled to address the identified anomalies. After examining the errors, a new timeline will be established to ensure the project’s successful completion. The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to quality infrastructure and the timely delivery of projects for the benefit of the citizens.
