The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar, expressed deep concern over the prevailing economic hardship in Nigeria, emphasizing the frustration and hunger experienced by Nigerians, particularly in the northern region.
Speaking at the 6th executive committee meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC) in Kaduna state, the traditional ruler highlighted insecurity and poverty as the primary challenges plaguing the people of the north.
Abubakar noted the alarming rise in poverty levels and the lack of sustainable livelihoods, which have deprived many of basic necessities such as regular meals.
“Insecurity and the rising level of poverty are two issues that we cannot ignore,” the Sultan remarked, underscoring the urgent need for collective action to address these pressing issues.
He expressed disappointment in the current state of affairs, observing continuity between the present administration and its predecessor, both belonging to the same political party.
The Sultan stressed the pivotal role of traditional rulers in providing solutions to the nation’s myriad problems, emphasizing the importance of education and healthcare alongside tackling insecurity and poverty.
Acknowledging the growing agitation and frustration among the populace, Abubakar emphasized the responsibility of traditional, spiritual, and diplomatic leaders in assuaging the concerns of the people and maintaining their trust.
He highlighted the need to address the unemployment crisis among the youth population, warning of the potential dangers posed by millions of idle young people without opportunities for employment or sustenance.
The Sultan called for collaboration between traditional leaders and state governors to foster peace and stability within their respective regions, emphasizing the council’s readiness to work with governmental authorities to address the challenges facing the nation.
In concluding, Abubakar reiterated the importance of combining prayers with tangible actions to effect meaningful change, emphasizing the imperative of proactive measures to alleviate the suffering and uncertainty endured by millions of Nigerians.
