Former senator and social activist, Shehu Sani, has called on the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to launch an investigation into the alleged use of “juju” (charm) by Ivory Coast national team goalkeeper, Yahia Fofana, during the recent African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Sani took to social media to express his concerns, stating, “FIFA should investigate the alleged use of Juju by the Ivory Coast Goalkeeper as circulated in the images and take measures. If FIFA failed to do so, next time we should go with the crew of our native Doctors.”
The call for an investigation comes after a video surfaced on social media showing something allegedly fetish around Fofana’s waist during one of the matches. The black material, secured with a white rope, was visible at the back of the goalkeeper.
SaharaReporters previously reported Nigeria’s defeat in the AFCON final match against Ivory Coast. Despite criticism of the Super Eagles’ performance, team captain Ahmad Musa emphasized the team’s resilience and determination, thanking fans for their support.
“Despite the twists and turns of the game, our team stood strong, displaying resilience and determination that resonated with fans across the nation,” Musa stated.
He further encouraged unity and solidarity beyond the football pitch, urging Nigerians to embrace diversity and face challenges together.
“In a time where economic challenges weigh heavily on our shoulders, let us carry the same spirit of unity beyond the football pitch and into every aspect of our lives,” Musa wrote.
“As we face the hurdles ahead, let’s remember that together, we are stronger. Let’s channel the same energy and comradeship we experienced during the tournament into tackling the obstacles that lie ahead. Let’s embrace our diversity as a strength and stand united as one nation, one team, one family.
“Thank you, Nigeria, for your undying support. Let’s continue to strive for greatness, both on and off the field,” he concluded.
The call for FIFA’s intervention underscores the seriousness with which allegations of misconduct are being addressed in football tournaments, emphasizing the need for fair play and integrity in the sport.
