Umuahia, Abia State – Governor Dr. Alex Otti of Abia State has expressed a strong desire to revive train services on the Eastern tracks, which have remained inactive for many years.
The governor conveyed his enthusiasm during a meeting on Wednesday with officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Eastern District. Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Kazie Uko, issued a statement detailing Governor Otti’s commitment to the resurgence of rail transportation.
Governor Otti reminisced about a time when rail was the most viable means of transportation in the country but lamented its disappearance over the last three decades.
He assured the Nigerian Railway Corporation of Abia State’s support and urged them to keep him informed about developments in the ongoing rehabilitation of the rail tracks within the state.
“The Governor pledged to address the request for security and further engage the people on the need to protect and safeguard railway installations in their localities. He warned that any person caught engaging in vandalization of railway tracks would be dealt with,” stated the release.
The Railway District Manager, Mr. Modibbo Mohammed, leading the delegation, briefed Governor Otti about the ongoing rehabilitation of the railway tracks from Port Harcourt to Aba. Mohammed disclosed that the first phase, covering 63 kilometers from Port Harcourt to Aba, would be completed by the end of this year. Additionally, the second phase from Aba to Umuahia is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2024.
Mr. Modibbo solicited the governor’s support in addressing the issue of track vandalization, requesting a patrol vehicle for enhanced security. He emphasized the potential job creation for youths and the provision of alternative transportation means for the populace once the railway services are fully operational.
Commending Governor Otti for the infrastructural development witnessed in the state during his tenure, Mr. Modibbo expressed optimism about the positive impact of the revived railway services.
