Atedo Peterside, the Founder of Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc, has expressed his perspective on the contentious slogan ‘All Eyes On The Judiciary,’ deeming it a neutral expression that should not be offensive to individuals of sound judgment.
Originating as a social media campaign in support of Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, the “All Eyes on the Election Tribunal Judges” narrative gained traction ahead of the verdict on petitions challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s electoral victory.
As the campaign gained visibility through billboards across Nigeria, the Federal Government took action to disband the Secretariat of the Advertising Standard Panel (ASP) for approving the slogan, asserting that it was offensive to the judiciary. Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, the Director-General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), ordered the removal of the billboards, contending that the slogan amounted to a form of blackmail directed at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.
Peterside took to the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to share his views on the matter. He conveyed that in his opinion, the slogan ‘All Eyes On The Judiciary’ is a neutral expression that should not cause offense to anyone who values a civilized society and demonstrates right-thinking and sincerity.
His comment provides insight into the ongoing debate surrounding the campaign’s intent and the level of its impact on public sentiment. As the conversation continues, individuals with differing perspectives will likely contribute their viewpoints on the appropriateness and implications of the slogan in the broader context of democratic discourse and the respect for institutions.
