The Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, has apprehended 28 individuals involved in various criminal activities across the state. Among the suspects were two secondary school girls aged 13 and 15, who were arrested for faking their own kidnapping and demanding a ransom from their mother.
The commander of the Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed that the two girls, in JSS 1 and JSS 3, hid in Oka-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area, and pretended to be kidnappers. They called their mother and demanded N100,000 as ransom for their release.
Additionally, the girls threatened the monarch of their town, stating that if the ransom was not paid within 24 hours, they would harm the abductees in their custody.
Adeleye emphasized the corps’ commitment to eradicating kidnapping in Ondo State, citing that kidnapping cases top the list of criminal activities in the region.
The arrests were made in collaboration with the Department of State Security, who tracked the telephone line used by the girls. During the interrogation, one of the girls confessed that it was her elder sister who lured her into the scheme.
The 13-year-old girl revealed that her sister devised the plan to declare themselves kidnapped and demand N50,000 each from their mother. She admitted that they were not aware that the person on the phone was the monarch of their town when they made the threatening calls.
The Ondo State Amotekun continues its efforts to tackle kidnapping and ensure the safety and security of the state’s residents.
