Former Barcelona winger Emmanuel Amuneke has responded to the criticism following his preference for Mohamed Salah over Victor Osimhen in the 2023 African Player of the Year selection. The controversy arose from a viral video posted on CAF’s social media, where Amuneke voiced his choice for the Egypt and Liverpool star.
Amuneke, a former Super Eagles forward, addressed the backlash from Nigerians who accused him of being unpatriotic and envious of Napoli’s Osimhen. The 52-year-old clarified that he was quoted out of context, expressing impatience with the negative comments.
During a discussion with a former player and captain of the Egyptian national team, who is transitioning to a TV producer role, Amuneke explained that he was asked to choose between Hakimi and Salah. He chose Salah based on his experience playing in Egypt and his familiarity with the players.
Amuneke emphasized that he was not involved in the voting process and reminded the public of his positive sentiments towards Osimhen. He urged Nigerians to stop spreading false news and creating misleading impressions.
Providing context, Osimhen was part of Amuneke’s Nigeria U17 squad that won the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup, where he earned the Golden Boot and Silver Ball honors. Amuneke praised Osimhen’s achievements and expressed hope for his continued success in representing Nigeria.
Osimhen, 24, scored 31 goals in 39 matches for Napoli last season, contributing to their first Serie A title since 1990. He joins the ranks of Nigerian football legends, including Rasheed Yekini, Nwankwo Kanu, and Victor Ikpeba, who have claimed the African Player of the Year award.
