In a recent address during the 10th edition of the Anglican Prayer Rally of Anambra State in Awka, Governor Chukwuma Soludo expressed his dismay at the growing prevalence of idolatry in the South East, even with the abundant presence of churches in the region.
Governor Soludo, in his remarks, highlighted that, despite the significant number of individuals who claim Christianity, only a minority genuinely practice it. He offered advice to church leaders, encouraging them to prioritize evangelism and soul-winning over physical projects.
During his speech, he emphasized the importance of reducing fees in schools owned by churches to ensure affordability for the vulnerable and less privileged members of society.
He stated, “The increasing rate of idolatry amidst the proliferation of churches is regrettable. We must avoid the complacency of those who feel we have arrived; making the church remain on a maintenance level. If we are not careful, I see a dangerous trend where the church will get distracted in various directions of system maintenance, projects upon projects.”
Governor Soludo stressed that the essence of governance and Christianity lies in reaching out to the poor and vulnerable, and he reassured the citizens that his government is committed to their welfare despite limited available resources.
Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, the Archbishop of the Province of Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese, called on both federal and state governments to make necessary sacrifices for the betterment of the citizenry.
In his sermon, Rt. Rev. Ephraim Ikeakor, the Bishop of Amichi Diocese, emphasized that the purpose of the prayer rally was to allow the congregation to encounter God, who desires fruitfulness and multiplication for His children.
