Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has reportedly resigned from his position amidst controversies and mounting pressure from within the party. Multiple reports suggest that his resignation was to avoid being removed from office.
The Western Post, a source close to the APC leadership, revealed that Adamu’s resignation was prompted by various issues, including his lack of support for President Bola Tinubu during the campaign. The party’s NEC meeting, which was scheduled for July 10 and 11, was postponed to this week due to the President’s international engagements.
Several elements within the party had been calling for Adamu’s resignation for the past two weeks, threatening to remove him at the upcoming NEC meeting if he refused to step down. The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, was among those who reportedly advised Adamu to resign, considering him a liability to the party.
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who is also the Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, allegedly played a significant role in convincing Adamu to step down. The Governor made it clear that if Adamu didn’t voluntarily resign, they would remove him at the next NEC meeting.
The calls for Adamu’s resignation were fueled by accusations that he worked against President Bola Tinubu during the party’s presidential primaries. It was claimed that he publicly supported former Senate President Ahmed Lawan and failed to fully back Tinubu, even after he secured the party’s ticket.
Furthermore, Adamu was also accused of mismanaging the party’s funds, adding to the growing discontent within the APC. As of now, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, has not responded to inquiries regarding the situation.
