On July 22, 2023, troops from the 14 Brigade, operating under the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, successfully rescued 13 kidnap victims along the Ngodo-Isuochi road in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.
The rescue operation was initiated after the troops received a distress call concerning an attack by kidnappers on a Sienna SUV and an L300 Mitsubishi bus with Registration Number UWN 190 AL Enugu. The assailants had abducted the passengers and fled into the surrounding bushes.
In response to the situation, the troops quickly arrived at the scene and obtained additional information from witnesses. They embarked on a pursuit of the kidnappers, tracking them into the nearby bushes. During the search and rescue operation, five victims were initially rescued on the first day, and on July 23, 2023, eight additional victims were safely rescued, bringing the total number of rescued persons to 13.
Following the successful rescue, the Nigerian Army handed over the victims to the Nigerian Police in Umunne Ochi for further assistance and care.
