Former Vice President and the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed his belief that Nigeria as a nation is “doomed.” His statement comes shortly after the Supreme Court’s dismissal of his appeal and the affirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February presidential election.
In the lead judgment delivered by Justice Inyang Okoro, the apex court refused to consider the academic records of President Tinubu obtained from Chicago State University, which Atiku had sought to present as fresh evidence to support his allegations of certificate forgery against the former Lagos governor. The other justices on the panel unanimously agreed with the lead judgment, leading to the dismissal of Atiku’s appeals.
During an ongoing press conference in Abuja, Atiku lamented the impact of the court verdict on Nigeria, saying, “The bigger loss is not mine but for Nigeria. If the Supreme Court implies that crime is good and should be rewarded, then Nigeria has lost, and the country is doomed irrespective of who occupies the office.” Atiku’s comments reflect his dissatisfaction with the court’s decision and its potential implications for the nation.
