Former Governor of Cross River State, Professor Ben Ayade, has expressed disappointment over what he described as unfair treatment by the All Progressives Congress (APC) despite his unwavering loyalty and contributions to the party’s success. Speaking during a media interview, Ayade said he made huge political sacrifices to bring Cross River into the APC, at a time when it was politically risky to do so, yet his efforts have not been duly acknowledged.
The former governor recalled how he defied the odds to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in 2021, stating that his decision was not based on self-interest but on a deep understanding of Nigeria’s political direction. “I saw what many could not see,” he said. “It was obvious that Nigeria was moving towards a time when opposition parties would have limited influence. My move was strategic — to connect Cross River State to the federal government and ensure development flows to my people.”
Ayade said the transition was not easy, as he faced strong opposition from political forces determined to resist the change. “I carry the scars of that battle for the sovereignty of our state,” he lamented. “Those scars have not healed, but I have no regrets because I acted for the good of Cross River State.”
He further disclosed that his relationship with President Bola Tinubu goes beyond politics, describing him as a visionary leader who understands loyalty and reward. “President Tinubu is a smart and strategic leader who values commitment,” Ayade stated. “I am confident that he will surprise the nation positively because he understands the struggles of those who stood with him in difficult times.”
The former governor emphasized that he was among the earliest political figures in the country to publicly declare support for Tinubu’s presidential ambition, long before the APC primaries. “I openly endorsed him on both national and international media, including the BBC,” he said. “I told Nigerians that if Tinubu could transform Lagos, he had the capacity to fix Nigeria.”
Ayade said his support for Tinubu was total, as he invested time, energy, and resources to campaign for him during the 2023 general elections — sometimes at the expense of his own political race. “At a point, I almost forgot I had my own election to contest,” he admitted. “I was focused entirely on ensuring Tinubu’s victory because I believed in his vision for the country.”
Despite his loyalty and visible commitment to the APC, Ayade expressed sadness that the party has not shown him fairness or appreciation. “I must say, the APC has not treated me fairly,” he said. “However, I remain optimistic that justice will come, and that President Tinubu, being a man who values integrity and loyalty, will remember those who stood with him when it mattered most.”
The former governor concluded by reaffirming his confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership, saying he believes the president will deliver on his promises and restore hope to the nation. “In spite of all the challenges and the stories making the rounds, I am sure President Tinubu will surprise Nigerians,” Ayade added. “He knows those who fought by his side, and he will act wisely.”
