A wave of violent clashes between rival gangs in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State has left communities in disarray, with over 40 reported dead and several others sustaining serious injuries. The conflict, which erupted more than a week ago, involves the ‘Chain’ and ‘Full Fire’ gangs vying for supremacy in the region.
The initial confrontation between the two groups resulted in at least 22 deaths in Chito and Tyo Akosu communities on the first day of the encounter. Sources suggest that the conflict is centered around a power struggle among criminal kingpins in Ukum LGA.
The violence escalated over the weekend, with armed men storming a drinking spot at Tor Akosu village, killing seven and injuring several others. The situation took an even darker turn when armed men reportedly attacked a gathering in Ayati community, claiming three more lives. The spillover to Ayati was unexpected, adding to the complexity of the situation.
On Monday, the conflict shifted to Ukoosaa-Atam village in Sai, with armed men belonging to one of the rival gangs opening fire on passengers on motorbikes and occupants of tricycles. Ten people lost their lives, and others sustained injuries.
Local sources express fear and uncertainty, stating that distinguishing between sympathizers of the rival groups has become challenging, contributing to the escalating violence. The tension has forced residents to flee their homes for safety.
While the situation remains volatile, some locals see a glimmer of hope in the gangs turning their weapons against each other. They express the desire for divine intervention to bring about an end to the longstanding reign of armed men in the Sankera region, comprising Ukum, Logo, and Katsina-Ala LGAs. The hope is that the internal conflict among the gangs might lead to their mutual elimination, bringing peace to the beleaguered communities.
