Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the former Governor of Lagos State and prominent Nigerian politician, has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). His emergence was announced at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, held in Guinea-Bissau.
In his acceptance speech, Tinubu emphasized the importance of democracy and stated that it is the best form of government despite its challenges. He succeeds President Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau as the ECOWAS chair.
