The Nigeria Police Force has arraigned Aloy Ejimakor, legal counsel to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, alongside Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and ten others in connection with the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held in Abuja on Monday.
According to court documents shared on X (formerly Twitter) by former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, the accused were charged with inciting disturbance and breach of public peace in defiance of a court order.
The police alleged that the group disrupted public order by blocking roads, restricting free movement, and chanting war songs while demanding Nnamdi Kanu’s unconditional release.
Earlier, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed on Channels Television’s Politics Today that Ejimakor, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and several others were arrested near Transcorp Hilton for attempting to access restricted areas during the protest.
“We arrested Nnamdi Kanu’s brother and his lawyer because they insisted on gaining access to restricted zones. In total, eight people were arrested. They are currently at the State CID, and once investigations are concluded, they will be prosecuted,” Hundeyin stated.
The suspects have now been charged in court within 24 hours of their arrest, in line with police directives to enforce compliance with the court’s restrictions on public demonstrations.
