In a recent memoir titled “Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser, Media and Publicity (2015 – 2023),” former President Muhammadu Buhari disclosed the reason behind his decision not to dismiss the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, amidst speculations of his interest in the 2023 presidential race.
Buhari explained that he chose not to remove Emefiele because the CBN Governor had never discussed his presidential ambitions with him. The revelations were shared in the memoir authored by Femi Adesina, the former Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media and Publicity. The book was officially presented in Abuja on Tuesday.
The former President emphasized the importance of fairness and justice in his decision-making process. He stated, “I met Emefiele in office when I came, and unless there was firm evidence against him, it would be unfair and an act of injustice to remove him, acting on hearsay.” Buhari underscored the need for concrete evidence before taking any punitive action, recognizing the potential long-term impact on an individual’s reputation.
Buhari further highlighted his consciousness of the morale of those who served with him and expressed a desire for fairness from his successors. He acknowledged the sensitivity of the issue, stating, “I’m very conscious about the morale of people who serve with me. I also expect whoever succeeds me to be fair to me.”
Regarding Emefiele’s rumored involvement in the 2023 presidential campaign, Buhari revealed, “When he was linked with the campaign for the 2023 presidency, I did not ask him because he told nobody he was getting involved. Otherwise, I would have removed him and told the nation why.” This insight into Buhari’s decision-making process provides a glimpse into his commitment to fairness and adherence to due process.
