Since the commencement of commercial operations in December 2021, the Chinua Achebe Airport in Anambra State has witnessed an impressive record of 4,000 flights and accommodated no fewer than 250,000 passengers, according to Martins Nwafor, the Managing Director of the airport.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umueri on Tuesday, Nwafor shared that the airport experienced about 4,000 airlifts, averaging six flights per day. The initial four months were characterized by low activity, focusing on route building.
Nwafor highlighted that the airport has attracted two major flight operators engaging in full scheduled commercial operations, along with several private operators. The airport’s readiness for increased traffic during the upcoming Yuletide season was emphasized, with services available both day and night.
Comparing the performance of Chinua Achebe Airport with its peers and considering its relatively young presence in the industry, Nwafor expressed satisfaction, stating, “We are still working to improve our services, we hope that passengers will increase, and that will lead to more airline companies coming down here.”
Addressing safety concerns, Nwafor assured that the airport prioritizes passenger safety, mentioning that approximately 76 airport taxi operators have been screened by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Emphasizing the economic advantages of air transport, Nwafor asserted that air travel remains the most economical way to travel, considering the safety, speed, and comfort it provides to passengers. He added that when assessing the condition of roads and their impact on businesses, the additional cost of air travel is far outweighed by its numerous benefits.
