Prominent comedian Okey Bakassi has voiced his call for the abolition of the “state of origin” concept in Nigeria, labeling it a divisive tool. Speaking recently, Bakassi emphasized the need to advocate for a shift towards emphasizing “state of residence” instead. He argued that in the year 2023, it is unnecessary to inquire about an individual’s tribe or state of origin on forms, as these factors should not determine their ability to serve in office. He believes that focusing on one’s state of residence would strengthen national unity and contribute more significantly to the country’s development.
Bakassi also expressed his strong stance against allowing politicians charged with corruption to participate in elections. He urged lawmakers to pass legislation that would bar such individuals from the electoral cycle, regardless of whether they have been cleared of the charges. Comparing the situation to the corporate world, where companies typically refrain from hiring individuals facing criminal cases, Bakassi questioned the rationale behind electing leaders with pending legal issues.
The comedian stressed the importance of enacting laws that would create a more effective and accountable democratic system, ensuring that the country’s political space is not filled with politicians embroiled in corruption allegations.
