The Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended Kano-based politician Abdulmajid Danbilki Kwamanda over allegations of making threats to mobilize the masses and create unrest in Kano, with the aim of making the state ungovernable. The arrest was prompted by a viral video of one of Kwamanda’s interviews on a local radio station, where he allegedly discussed plans to incite an uprising and disrupt the peace in Kano.
A senior DSS official in Kano, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the arrest and revealed that Kwamanda was handed over to the police. Subsequently, he was charged before a Magistrate Court, which ordered his remand in a correctional facility. The controversial politician had been critical of the Supreme Court judgment affirming the election of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and had expressed dissatisfaction with the political landscape, targeting President Bola Tinubu for alleged interference in Kano politics.
In the interview that led to Kwamanda’s arrest, he reportedly claimed that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), was planning to restore Muhammadu Sanusi, the deposed 14th Emir of Kano. Kwamanda further asserted that he would mobilize the masses to take to the streets, causing widespread unrest to the extent that the federal government would be compelled to declare a state of emergency in Kano.
Additionally, Kwamanda criticized recent decisions, such as the Central Bank of Nigeria’s move to relocate staff from Abuja to Lagos and the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria’s decision to move its headquarters from Abuja to Lagos. He alleged that these actions were part of a plan by the Tinubu-led administration to cripple the northern part of the country.
