A video capturing Nigerian police officers demanding money from a female biker on a tour from the Netherlands has surfaced, sparking concerns over potential extortion.
The officers were caught on camera along Moniya Road in Oyo State, as reported by Punch. The policemen stopped the Dutch tourist, inquiring about her origin and destination. In the 1:26-minute video, the tourist, revealing she was from the Netherlands en route to Abuja, seemed to surprise the officers.
Speaking in pidgin, the officers requested money or any valuables she had in her possession, saying, “Wetin you bring come? Wetin you won give me. O yah give me something nah.”
Despite the language barrier, the officers explicitly asked for money, to which the tourist questioned, “Why?”
The footage was shared on social media by user #Oyoaffairs, prompting a response from the Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, on Thursday. Adejobi acknowledged the incident along Moniya Road and called on the Oyo State police command to investigate the matter.
In his reaction, Adejobi stated, “Now that is along Moniya in Oyo, #OyoPoliceNG should take necessary steps on that. I have notified the PPRO Oyo of this. They need to be worked upon.”
The video raises concerns about police conduct and potential extortion, prompting calls for a thorough investigation to address the issue and uphold the integrity of law enforcement.
