In a significant political development, Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the upcoming 2024 governorship election in the state. Shaibu made his announcement in a pre-recorded speech aired on Monday, revealing his intention to vie for the governorship position under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Following the official declaration, Shaibu wasted no time and inaugurated his campaign office in Benin City, where he was joined by enthusiastic party supporters. In his statement, the 53-year-old, who has served as the deputy governor of Edo since 2016, emphasized the clarity of the people’s call for him to run.
“After all the consultations we have made, we needed to now make the answer to our consultations known to our people. And the answer is clear: they have asked me to run,” said Shaibu. He expressed his commitment to the development and growth of the state, pledging to make Edo great again.
The deputy governor, who had previously experienced a strained relationship with Governor Obaseki, highlighted his dedication to the progress of the state, even putting his life on the line for its welfare. Notably, Shaibu had faced a contentious situation leading to the relocation of his office outside the Government House during a disagreement with Governor Obaseki. However, he later issued an apology to his principal, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation.
Edo State is among the eight states with off-cycle governorship polls, a situation arising from litigations and court judgments. The inclusion of Edo in this list adds to the political dynamics of off-cycle elections, which also involve states such as Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun, and Ondo. The unfolding political landscape in Edo State is set to attract attention as the 2024 elections draw nearer.
