The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released 58 out of the 69 students from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, who were arrested earlier. The students were reportedly arrested in a midnight raid on hostels outside the campus.
The arrest took place in the Fine Touch and Superb hostels in Oduduwa Estate, Ile-Ife, with EFCC officials breaking into rooms to apprehend the students.
The National Association of University Students condemned the arrests, criticizing the process and actions of the EFCC. In their statement, the students’ leadership expressed their concern for the safety and security of the students and compared the EFCC’s actions to that of a gang of thieves and burglars.
The EFCC, in a statement, announced the arrest of 69 suspected internet fraudsters in Ile-Ife, stating that credible intelligence linked Oduduwa Estate to the activities of suspected internet fraudsters.
While confirming the release, Eruobami, a student leader, reported that 58 students have been released as of 8:51 pm. It remains unclear whether the remaining 11 students will also be released or if they will face further legal action.
