The South-East Zonal National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Chidiebere Goodluck Egwu, has charged the newly appointed Acting National Chairman of the party, Mohammed Abdulrahaman, to use his position to rebuild, reunite, and reposition the PDP as a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Egwu, who made the call in a statement released on Monday, congratulated Abdulrahaman on his emergence as Acting National Chairman, describing it as “a crucial opportunity for the reinvention of our great party.”
He stressed that the PDP has a historic responsibility to Nigerians, having laid the foundation for democratic governance from 1999 to 2015, before what he described as “a hijack of the system by anti-democratic forces.”
According to Egwu, the PDP’s decline in recent years was partly due to internal divisions and the complacency of its leadership. He urged Abdulrahaman to work closely with the party’s organs — including the Board of Trustees (BoT), National Executive Committee (NEC), and other critical stakeholders — to revive the PDP’s lost glory and restore confidence among Nigerians.
“Nigerians have been shortchanged for too long by the failure of the PDP to act as a vibrant opposition. This is the time to rebuild unity, restore discipline, and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that can rescue the nation from the brink,” Egwu stated.
He further appealed for genuine reconciliation among aggrieved members and called on leaders across all zones to prioritize the collective interest of the party above personal ambitions.
Egwu reaffirmed the commitment of the South-East PDP to support all efforts aimed at strengthening the party’s internal democracy and ensuring its readiness for the 2027 general elections.
“On behalf of the teeming members of our party in the South-East, we pledge total support for the new leadership. We must all come together as one family and reclaim the trust of Nigerians,” he added.
Political observers note that Egwu’s message reflects the growing demand within the PDP for a united front as it seeks to regain relevance amid defections, internal disputes, and challenges of restructuring ahead of the next elections.
