Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has stated that President Bola Tinubu possesses the constitutional authority to halt any criminal trial in Nigeria. Ejimakor has urged Tinubu to exercise the powers vested in him by the constitution to secure the release of the IPOB leader, who is currently being held by the Department of State Services (DSS).
In a tweet on Sunday, Kanu’s lawyer expressed confidence in Tinubu’s ability to rectify the injustices committed by his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari. Ejimakor emphasized that Tinubu does not have to wait for the Supreme Court to intervene in order to secure the release of Kanu.
According to Ejimakor, “Under the Constitution, the Attorney General of the Federation (in practice: the President) has the power to stop any criminal trial. So, President Tinubu doesn’t have to wait for the Supreme Court to undo the grave injustice (rendition) done by his predecessor by releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”
Nnamdi Kanu has been on trial by the federal government since his arrest and extradition from Kenya in 2021.
