Former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai revealed President Bola Tinubu’s ambitious vision to achieve constant power supply in Nigeria within the next seven years. El-Rufai made this revelation during his screening as a ministerial nominee before the Senate.
During the screening, Senator Abdulaziz Yari asked el-Rufai how he intends to confront the crisis in the energy sector if appointed as the Minister of Power. In response, the former Kaduna governor emphasized Tinubu’s determination to tackle the nation’s electricity problems head-on by implementing permanent solutions.
El-Rufai acknowledged that Nigeria’s power supply challenge has been a longstanding issue, defying every government for the past 60 years. He affirmed that President Tinubu is committed to ensuring Nigeria has a stable and reliable electricity supply and aims to eliminate power outages within the next seven years.
The former governor emphasized the significance of constant electricity for industrialization in the country. To achieve this vision, he stressed the need to address the constraints limiting full electricity production, particularly the insufficient supply of gas, which is the primary source of about 80% of the country’s power generation.
El-Rufai highlighted the challenges faced by gas-fired power stations that cannot produce electricity due to the lack of gas supply. He emphasized the importance of integrating gas and power under one roof to enhance the efficiency of the power generation process.
Furthermore, El-Rufai emphasized the need to improve the country’s power transmission infrastructure. He stated that the entire transmission system must be put in good shape, and the loop in the transmission system needs to be closed.
Nigeria has been grappling with a power crisis for years, experiencing frequent disruptions in the national grid. To address this critical issue, El-Rufai’s revelation of President Tinubu’s vision for constant power supply brings hope for a brighter future in the energy sector.
