The Presidential Election Petition Court has postponed the hearing of the petition filed by the Labour Party and its candidate, Peter Obi, against President Bola Tinubu to June 1. This adjournment is due to the illness of two crucial members of Obi’s legal team.
During the proceedings on Wednesday, Awa Kalu, SAN, counsel for the petitioners, requested the court to adjourn the case. He explained that the absence of the two staff members had disrupted their plans to present essential documents before the court.
Kalu stated, “Due to an unexpected development involving the sudden illness of two key staff members, I am constrained to request an adjournment until tomorrow. I assure the court that we will be present tomorrow morning and proceed vigorously.”
In response to the request, the counsel for the respondents expressed their opposition. However, Wole Olanipekun, SAN, counsel for Tinubu, expressed no objection to the adjournment. The counsel for the Independent National Electoral Commission, A.B. Mahmoud, SAN, and the counsel for the All Progressives Congress, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, also agreed to the application.
Justice Haruna Tsammani, the President of the court, granted the application and adjourned the petition until Thursday.
