In a groundbreaking achievement, Elizabeth Oshoba has etched her name in the history books as the first female Nigerian boxer to clinch a world title. The World Boxing Council (WBC) silver featherweight queen secured this historic victory with a (6-0-1) triumph over Italy’s Michela Braga in the tenth round of their bout in Copenhagen on Saturday.
This win solidifies Oshoba’s position as the WBC silver featherweight champion, extending her professional record to seven consecutive victories, including four knockout wins. The 24-year-old Nigerian displayed a stunning performance, flooring Braga in the eighth round and ultimately delivering a knockout blow in the tenth round to seal the impressive victory.
Expressing her joy and ambition, Oshoba said, “Yes, of course, I feel on top of the world. I am very happy with this title, it is my first (world) title but I am still focused, and I can’t wait to fight more world title fights and claim the main WBC belt.”
Having previously won the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Oshoba is determined to continue her success in the boxing world. The Interim President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, Azania Omo-Agege, commended Oshoba for her historic achievement, emphasizing that she has always seen Oshoba as a champion and expressed optimism about her future endeavors.
This victory marks Oshoba’s second title in the last two months, following her unanimous decision win over Martina Righi in November to claim the IBO female super-featherweight title. Elizabeth Oshoba’s triumph not only adds to her impressive professional record but also serves as a significant milestone for Nigerian women in the world of boxing.
