Femi Falana (SAN), a well-known human rights lawyer, has taken action to seek clarity and justice regarding the untimely demise of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. Falana’s request for a coroner’s inquest into the singer’s death was delivered in a letter to the Chief Coroner of the High Court of Lagos State on Monday.
The letter, signed by Falana’s daughter, Folakemi Falana, characterized Mohbad’s death as both “very tragic” and “mysterious.” Expressing deep concern, Falana shared the letter via her Instagram account, highlighting the troubling circumstances surrounding the singer’s passing.
Femi Falana explained the context of his involvement, stating, “Mohbad’s death stings because despite the fact that he wasn’t on my radar and I never met him or knew him personally, I heard he was trying to leave his Label.” She continued by revealing that some of Mohbad’s friends had reached out to her months ago seeking advice on negotiating their departure from their respective record labels.
Falana recounted her willingness to assist but mentioned that Mohbad’s friends eventually indicated that they were handling the situation internally. The tragic revelation of Mohbad’s alleged harassment and fear-stricken existence until his final days shocked Falana and prompted her to take action.
The human rights lawyer has now requested a formal coroner’s inquest into Mohbad’s death. She mentioned that the letter addressed to the Chief Coroner of Lagos State was received and acknowledged on the same day. The objective of this inquiry is to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s passing and to ensure that justice is served.
While recognizing that the inquest cannot bring the late singer back, Falana emphasized that his loved ones deserve answers and closure. She vowed to continue applying pressure until the truth is revealed, and those responsible are held accountable.
The call for a coroner’s inquest underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in cases involving suspicious deaths, particularly within the entertainment industry.
