As the dry season takes hold in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is appealing to residents to exercise caution and avoid activities that could lead to wildfires. Mr Mohammed Ibrahim Sabo, the Acting Director General of FEMA, issued the appeal in a statement in Abuja.
The Acting Director General highlighted the heightened risk of wildfires during the dry conditions and strong winds associated with the harmattan season. He stressed the need for a proactive and comprehensive disaster management approach during this period.
Mr Sabo specifically cautioned against indiscriminate bush burning, particularly in communities. He also advised that the discharge of petroleum products should be done only when the temperature is cool. Furthermore, residents were urged to switch off electrical appliances when not in use and equip homes, cars, and business places with basic firefighting equipment, including extinguishers.
The FEMA Boss emphasized the potential impact of reduced visibility due to dust and haze on road and air travel. He appealed to practitioners to exercise caution and adhere to flight advisories during this season.
In case of emergencies, residents were encouraged to use the 112 emergency toll-free number. The statement underlines the importance of community awareness and responsible behavior to mitigate the risk of wildfires and other potential hazards during the dry season.
