The Federal Government has declared its resolute stance against borrowing from both local and foreign entities following its bold step of removing subsidies on petrol and harmonizing exchange rates. In an announcement made by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Chief Wale Edun, at the conclusion of the inaugural Federal Executive Council meeting held in Abuja on Monday, the decision to eliminate subsidies is expected to yield substantial benefits for the nation’s economy.
Chief Edun emphasized that the funds saved from the subsidy removal would be reinvested across various sectors to bolster government revenue and enhance the business climate for both local and foreign investors. He underscored that the increased revenue generated through this move has facilitated the implementation of short, medium, and long-term measures to mitigate any potential adverse impacts.
Furthermore, the administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, remains steadfast in its commitment to revitalize the economy and navigate it away from the challenges it has encountered. The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Doris Uzoka-Anite, confirmed that numerous investment opportunities have already emerged across sectors such as oil and gas, health, solid minerals, and agriculture. The ministry is poised to collaborate with relevant government bodies to fulfill the President’s pledge to create employment opportunities for Nigeria’s burgeoning youth population.
Highlighting the health sector’s contribution, Dr. Ali Pate, the Minister of Health, articulated plans to exploit key segments of the healthcare value chain to bolster the economy and generate jobs for Nigerians. The President’s directive to make courageous and innovative decisions in favor of the nation’s interests has propelled the government’s progressive agenda. Dr. Pate praised the President’s swift action in removing the petrol subsidy since the outset of his term, illustrating his responsiveness to economic imperatives.
