In a surprising turn of events, Doyin Okupe, the former Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, has officially resigned from the party. Okupe’s decision was communicated through a letter made available to Vanguard on Monday, outlining the reasons behind his departure.
In the letter, Okupe stated, “I submit herewith my letter of resignation from the Labour Party with effect from today. You will recall that our flagbearer, Mr Peter Obi, myself, and others left the PDP abruptly and had to look for a Special Purpose Vehicle in which to contest the 2023 Presidential Elections.”
He went on to express gratitude to the Labour Party, its leadership, and executives for providing them with a platform to contest the elections. Okupe acknowledged the lack of burdensomeness and credited the party for facilitating their participation in the electoral process.
However, Okupe highlighted the ideological misalignment as the primary reason for his resignation, stating, “It is exceedingly difficult for me to continue to stay in the Labour Party which is ideologically rooted in the left of the center. I have been a rightist and a Liberal Democrat all my entire life. It is, therefore, this ideological conflict that makes me seek an exit so that I may continue my political activities with liberalism, sincerity, and freedom.”
The former Director-General, who had previously withdrawn from the campaign of Peter Obi in 2023, emphasized the need to align with his political ideology for the continuation of his political activities.
Concluding his letter, Okupe expressed appreciation for the cordiality and respect accorded to him during his tenure as the Director General of the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organization. He extended well wishes to the Labour Party and its leadership in their future endeavors.
Doyin Okupe’s resignation adds a new dimension to the political landscape, and it remains to be seen how this development will impact the Labour Party as it navigates future political engagements.
