Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the immediate past governor of Kano state, is set to become the interim national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Ganduje recently met with President Bola Tinubu and three APC governors at the presidential villa, where it was decided that he will take over as the party chairman.
The position became vacant following the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu as the party’s national chairman, along with the national secretary, Iyiola Omisore. Ganduje is expected to assume the role temporarily until the party’s convention later in the year.
President Tinubu, who returned from the African Union (AU) meeting in Kenya, reportedly insisted on making Ganduje the party chairman. The Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Hope Uzodinma, sought approval from his colleagues and other critical stakeholders before finalizing the decision.
After meetings with Ganduje on Tuesday and Wednesday, Uzodinma, President Tinubu, and APC governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Dapo Abiodun confirmed Ganduje as the interim national chairman.
The move to appoint Ganduje as the interim chairman started on Monday when Uzodinma met with him in Abuja and conveyed the president’s intention to make him the party’s chairman.
The decision was sealed during the meeting on Wednesday night with President Tinubu, the governors, and Vice President Kashim Shettima present. Ganduje’s appointment is expected to bring stability to the party as it prepares for its convention later this year.
