In the aftermath of a violent attack on its Embassy in Niamey, France has announced the preparation of an evacuation plan for its citizens and other European nationals from Niger. The attack, carried out by visibly prepared groups, has raised concerns over the security situation in the country. The airspace has been closed, leaving foreign nationals unable to leave on their own.
The evacuation of citizens is set to commence immediately to ensure their safety and well-being. The incident has prompted France to take swift action to protect its citizens in Niger.
In a related development, the government of Guinea has expressed its support for the Nigerien junta, as conveyed in a joint press release issued by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry for the Armed Forces. The National Committee of the Rally for Development (CNRD) in Guinea has been closely monitoring the socio-political developments in Niger since July 26, 2023.
The Guinean authorities commend the people of Niger for their sense of patriotism and salute the Defence and Security Forces for working towards finding solutions to the nation’s problems. The CNRD believes that the new authorities in Niger will strive to ensure stability and harmony in the country and the sub-region.
Regarding the recent sanctions and measures proposed by ECOWAS, including military intervention, the CNRD considers them as options that may lead to a human disaster with far-reaching consequences beyond Niger’s borders. As a result, Guinea refrains from applying these sanctions against the brotherly people of Niger and urges ECOWAS to prioritize dialogue and return to peaceful resolutions.
The Republic of Guinea reiterates its pan-Africanist vision and solidarity with the Nigerien population, while urging the CNSP (National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland) authorities to maintain unity and national cohesion. The CNRD emphasizes that a military intervention against Niger could lead to the disintegration of ECOWAS and highlights the importance of respecting the sovereignty of member states.
Furthermore, the CNRD clarifies that the sanctions and threats issued during the July 30, 2023 summit do not represent the position of the Republic of Guinea. The CNRD calls on the leaders of the sub-region to focus on strategic socio-economic issues that align with the aspirations of the young populations in the ECOWAS area, rather than being preoccupied with the fate of ousted presidents.
The developments in Niger and the region highlight the need for regional stability and cooperation to address the challenges faced by African nations in pursuit of their aspirations and sovereignty.
