The former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has received advice to apologize for allegedly working against President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC). The advice came from Sunday Akere, a former Commissioner for Information and Strategy who served in Aregbesola’s first term as governor of Osun State.
Akere made these remarks in response to statements attributed to Aregbesola during a reception held in his honor by concerned Muslim scholars and clerics in Oyo town, Oyo State. At the event, Aregbesola acknowledged his indebtedness to President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari for his achievements and political success.
However, Akere accused Aregbesola of working against the interests of the APC in the presidential election on February 25 and the gubernatorial election in Osun State on July 16, 2022. The Peoples Democratic Party emerged victorious in both elections in the state.
Akere called on Aregbesola to apologize for his alleged anti-party activities. He further suggested that Aregbesola and his supporters should appear before the committee headed by Prof. Isaac Adewole, established to reposition the APC in the state. He emphasized the need for the party to make a decision on the matter after their appearance and apology.
Responding to the allegations, Lani Baderinwa, who served as Information Commissioner during Aregbesola’s second term, dismissed the claims of anti-party activities, stating that there is no evidence to support such allegations. Baderinwa emphasized that accusations of anti-party activities require thorough investigation before further action is taken. He also highlighted the lack of concrete evidence in the case of Osun State and criticized the allegations as baseless.
The dispute between Aregbesola and his accusers reflects ongoing tensions within the APC as they navigate the aftermath of recent elections and seek to strengthen their position within the party.
