The Imo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has taken disciplinary action against one of its officers who participated in Wednesday’s nationwide protest led by the organised labour, during which he appeared in a special marshal regalia. The officer has been de-marshalled and is no longer affiliated with the corps.
Evaristus Ebeniro, the Sector Commander of FRSC in Imo State, confirmed the decision, stating that the protester had been de-marshalled and his special marshal identity card revoked. The protest, organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Unions Congress (TUC), was a response to the Federal Government’s removal of fuel subsidy, and the officer’s involvement while in uniform raised concerns.
Ebeniro further clarified that the protester, although formerly a special corps marshal, had faced disciplinary issues while serving in that capacity. He was summoned due to inactivity and a lack of commitment to his duties. Subsequently, he absconded and was subsequently de-marshalled in absentia, following the established protocols of the corps.
In light of the incident, the FRSC initiated an investigation to identify the protester and ascertain the circumstances surrounding his involvement in the protest. The investigation revealed that the individual, who is a unionist, had previously held the position of a special marshal. However, his participation in the protest while donning the FRSC uniform raised concerns about adherence to professional conduct.
To address this breach of conduct, the Imo State Command of the FRSC took prompt action to de-marshal the officer, ensuring that he no longer holds the privileges and responsibilities associated with the position. Additionally, the command arrested the protester and retrieved the special marshal regalia.
