In a significant political development, a group of five Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors, led by Nyesom Wike, engaged in talks with President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday. The group, known as G-5 PDP Governors, comprises four former governors and one serving governor. The meeting was held at the Presidential Villa, following a prior gathering at the residence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
While specific details of the discussions remain undisclosed, it is reported that the focus was on establishing a working relationship between President Tinubu and the former governors. A source familiar with the meeting indicated that the initial discussions at Wike’s residence centered around finding a role for the former governors in the broader political landscape and exploring collaboration opportunities.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, “Exact details of what was discussed isn’t available to me at the moment, but from discussions held during the initial meeting at Wike’s residence, it was all about finding accommodation for the former governors in the scheme of things and, of course, how they can work together.”
The timing of the meeting, just 24 hours before the commencement of the Imo State PDP governorship campaign in Owerri, suggests potential implications for the political landscape, especially given the growing tension over the position of the party Secretary.
The former Governors present at the meeting were Nyesom Wike, the immediate past Rivers State Governor and current FCT minister; Samuel Ortom, former Benue State Governor; Ifianyi Ugwuanyi, former Enugu State Governor; Okezie Ikpeazu, his Abia State counterpart; and serving Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde. The outcomes of this meeting are likely to be closely watched in the political arena.
