Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, revealed on Sunday that the G5 group within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to throw its support behind President Bola Tinubu’s potential re-election bid in 2027.
The announcement was made during a luncheon hosted by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The G5 group, comprising Ortom, Wike, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Seyi Makinde (Oyo), had previously rejected Atiku Abubakar as the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, choosing to support a southern candidate in the person of Tinubu.
Ortom, expressing the group’s unwavering support, declared that the G5 has no regrets about endorsing Tinubu’s victory in the last election. He asserted that the group is committed to backing the former Lagos governor for a second term in office as Nigeria’s President in 2027.
During the gathering, Ortom emphasized the importance of supporting Tinubu’s leadership, citing Nigerians’ belief in his capabilities. He stated, “If we work to ensure Bola Ahmed succeeds, there will be tomorrow for anybody to even contest the election at all.”
Ortom also highlighted the seasoned administrative skills of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing confidence that Tinubu would address critical challenges, including security and the economy, during his potential presidency.
The surprising alliance signals a shift in political dynamics and sets the stage for evolving alliances and strategies in the lead-up to the 2027 presidential election.
