Ilaro, Yewa South LGA, Ogun State – Senate President Godswill Akpabio, addressing attendees at the grand finale of the Yewa Cultural Festival, passionately recounted his firsthand experience of being stuck in traffic for over two hours on the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta expressway due to poor road conditions.
Accompanied by 70 senators, Akpabio, determined to empathize with the daily struggles of the people, insisted on driving to the event venue. He stated, “When I was coming, I decided to pass through the Lagos-Abeokuta, Papalanto-Ilaro road to experience the pain you people are facing on the road. I spent about two hours in traffic along Papalanto-Ilaro road because two tankers fell on the road. I really sympathise with you. I went through what you people are passing through on a daily basis.”
Expressing solidarity with Governor Abiodun, Akpabio pledged Senate support for the rehabilitation of the critical roads in the region. He declared, “I am giving Governor Abiodun the Senate support in rehabilitation of these important roads. Yewaland has the greatest number of industries that a local government can ever have in Nigeria, just five local governments. Therefore, we recognize the need to use the best set of contractors to do your roads because of the wear and tear. I assure you that we will be working with our brother, Dapo Abiodun. Your lives will not be the same again.”
Bestowed with the chieftaincy title of ‘Fiwagboye’ of Yewaland by the Yewa Traditional Council, Akpabio also addressed the youth, urging them to stay away from drugs and fraudulent activities, promising a better life for those who choose a clean path.
Governor Abiodun, in his plea to the Senate, requested intervention to persuade the Federal Government to transfer the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Road to the state. He emphasized the road’s importance to the state’s socio-economic development, revealing that his journey from Abeokuta to Ilaro took three hours due to the deplorable state of the road.
The governor announced ongoing discussions with the Minister of Works regarding the reconstruction of the Abeokuta-Olorunda-Imeko and the completion of the Abeokuta-Iborro-Ilaro roads. He appealed to the Senate, saying, “Mr Senate President, please help us with the Federal Government to transfer this road to us. This road is very key to our socio-economic development.”
