Today (Tuesday), Mr. Godwin Emefiele was granted bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos. He was granted bail in the sum of N20 million, and a surety in a like sum. The bail was granted following a two-count charge of illegal possession of a firearm brought against him by the Department of State Service (DSS). Emefiele had been in DSS custody for over a month before the bail was granted.
Emefiele’s lawyer, Mr. Joseph Daudu, SAN, argued for bail after his client pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge, contending that the offense for which Emefiele was charged is bailable.
Mr. Emefiele was brought to the court in a white Hilux Pick-up van, with the plate number covered, around 9.23 a.m. Upon arrival at the court, he stepped down from the van and was assisted by a female, whose identity could not be confirmed at press time.
The trial judge in the matter is Justice Nicolas Oweibo. The case will proceed with further proceedings as the trial continues.
