Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has appeared in court seeking a variation of his bail conditions in the ongoing trial related to procurement fraud charges amounting to N1.2 billion.
Emefiele is facing six counts of procurement fraud, and this marks his first court appearance without the usual armed security personnel guiding him to the courtroom. He was released from Kuje Custodial Centre on December 23, 2023, after spending 34 days in custody following the judge’s decision to grant him bail.
The former CBN governor is now requesting the court to review certain terms of his bail conditions. The matter is currently before Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, where arguments on the proposed variation of bail conditions are being presented.
This development underscores the ongoing legal proceedings against Emefiele and highlights the significant nature of the charges he is facing. The case has drawn attention to the intricacies of financial allegations involving a high-profile figure in Nigeria’s banking and economic landscape.
