Gov Umo Eno Urges Respect for Akpabio, Cautions Youths Against Defaming Leaders

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has appealed to the state’s youths to refrain from attacking or spreading false allegations against the family of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, emphasizing the need for respect and unity among citizens.

The governor made the call following a peaceful demonstration by members of the Akwa Ibom Youth Coalition at the Government House in Uyo on Tuesday. The protest was reportedly linked to a recent controversy involving a female member of the Greater Akpabio family.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ekerete Udoh, Governor Eno acknowledged the citizens’ right to express themselves but cautioned that family disputes should not be turned into public scandals capable of damaging the reputation of respected leaders.

“We don’t interfere in domestic issues that are best settled privately within families,” the governor stated. “I urge our youths not to destroy the leaders God has raised for us by making unfounded accusations or tarnishing their image.”

He further emphasized that Akwa Ibom’s progress depends on peace, mutual respect, and civility, urging young people to adopt dialogue and reconciliation in resolving grievances rather than engaging in public confrontation.

Governor Eno also praised Senate President Akpabio as a source of pride for the state, noting that the office he holds demands the highest level of honour and respect, regardless of political differences.

“Our leaders, irrespective of party affiliations, remain valuable assets to the state. We must protect their integrity and uphold our collective dignity,” he added.

The governor’s intervention follows a murder allegation made by Akpabio’s sister-in-law, Mrs. Patience Akpabio, who accused the Senate President of being involved in killings during his tenure as governor.

In reaction, the Afe Nkuku Annang, the supreme council of traditional rulers in Annang land, has summoned Mrs. Akpabio and her husband, Barrister Ibanga Akpabio, to appear before it within seven days to address what it described as “malicious and inciting” statements made against the Senate President.

According to a communiqué issued after their Monday meeting, the monarchs warned that failure to appear before them for clarification and traditional cleansing would result in serious sanctions under Annang customary law.

Governor Eno’s remarks are seen as part of broader efforts to promote stability and respect among Akwa Ibom’s political elite, as the state seeks to maintain unity amid growing tensions.
