The simmering feud between Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, has intensified, with the governor issuing a stern warning against the adoption of the “emilokan spirit” in the state’s political landscape. The term “emilokan,” a Yoruba phrase meaning “it is my turn,” gained prominence during President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 election campaign.
Governor Obaseki, during a meeting with leaders of the Edo South Senatorial District at the Government House in Benin, expressed his disapproval of the “Emilokan” ideology, asserting that it was not a viable strategy for winning elections and serving the interests of the Edo people. He emphasized that the people of Edo State would decide their political leadership based on merit and the candidates’ commitment to the welfare of the citizens.
The governor’s remarks were seemingly directed at his deputy, Philip Shaibu, who is reportedly harboring aspirations of contesting the 2024 governorship election. In the past, Mr. Shaibu had staunchly supported Governor Obaseki during their time in the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly during the heated political battles against Adams Oshiomhole, the former APC national chairman.
The rift between Obaseki and Shaibu stems from their transition to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following Obaseki’s denial of the APC governorship ticket. Despite their joint victory in the subsequent election, tensions have arisen, with Mr. Shaibu recently seeking legal action to prevent what he perceives as an attempt by Governor Obaseki to remove him from office.
Governor Obaseki has accused Mr. Shaibu of manipulating the youth council election in pursuit of his own political ambitions, leading to instability within the government. He underscored the importance of conducting oneself ethically and responsibly, especially when holding positions of authority.
The governor’s statement alluded to the need for unity within the administration and a commitment to serving the people’s interests, rather than pursuing personal agendas. The Edo State governor emphasized that ambition should be channeled through proper channels and urged his deputy to follow the right path to achieve his aspirations.
As the feud between Governor Obaseki and Deputy Shaibu escalates, the political landscape in Edo State remains rife with speculation and uncertainty. The future course of action for both leaders and their respective ambitions will undoubtedly shape the dynamics of the state’s politics in the coming months.
