In a recent statement issued on Saturday, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State extended a heartfelt apology to the people of the state in the wake of a recent political crisis that has gripped the region.
Fubara characterized the crisis as “regrettable anxieties” and stressed the importance of making sacrifices for the sake of peace. He addressed several critical issues, including the recent bombing of the state House of Assembly complex and the divisions among lawmakers.
The governor also expressed his appreciation for the intervention of President Bola Tinubu in helping resolve the rift between himself and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
Fubara’s statement reads, “My dear good people of Rivers State, I consider it necessary to issue this press statement on the developments of the past few days in our dear state.”
He went on to describe the events surrounding the state House of Assembly, saying, “Late on Sunday, October 29, 2023, I was inundated with reports that the hallowed chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly has been gutted by fire. The blaze was successfully put out by the fire service, after which security agencies took control of the situation.”
Fubara further recounted his visit to the assembly complex to assess the damage and undertake remedial measures. He emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation by security agencies into the incident.
Regarding the divisions within the House of Assembly, he stated, “Shortly after, I got reports that the state House of Assembly had broken into two factions: one claiming to have impeached and suspended the House Leader and three others preparatory to initiating an impeachment action against me, and the other rival faction impeaching the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, thus sparking off some form of political crisis.”
The governor expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his intervention and acknowledged the involvement of elders in resolving the crisis.
Fubara concluded, “Let me clearly state that my actions are aimed at restoring peace and stability in our state. I am a man of peace, and as governor, the advancement of our state is my primary concern. Consequently, no sacrifice is too much for me to make to achieve this objective.” He expressed a commitment to embracing the path to lasting peace and working together to advance the peace, security, and progress of Rivers State.
